20 September - Nigeria (Lagos) PDF Print

Ruairi Moriarty

I am back in Lagos working on behalf of an international development company. Whilst they have an office in Lagos they require an independent review of all office sub-markets in Lagos.

There is an air of anticipation in the city in advance of the Golden Jubilee celebrating 50 years of independence. A local joke goes that in anticipation of a possible visit by British royalty, Nigerians areintriguedto know, as the Monarch brought the gift of independence last time, what present will she bring this time?

In conjunction with the independence celebrations are the impending elections. There is already a rumoured transfer of government focus away from badly needed civil works projects within Lagos and around the country towards the political war, to be waged between now and early 2011. Generally there appears to be considerable optimism in the air, maybe as much as there has ever been.
