29 October - Niger (Niamey) PDF Print

James Whitmee

I am in Niamey doing a review of activity and property values. It is a calm and green city split by the River Niger but with the bulk to the north of the river. It is connected by two bridges, one of which has recently been constructed by the Chinese.

Today I drove throughout the city. It is relatively easy to do as it is only around 9 km across, and apart from getting snarled up around the Grand Marché one get around it fairly easily.

The south side of the city is known as Harobanda, and much of the land here adjacent to the river is given over to the cultivation of rice. This side of the river is also dominated by the University Abdou-Moumouni Dioffo which comprises a massive campus. Here is a photo that I took from the south at the Port de Pirogues looking over towards the central part of Niamey.

I am staying at the Baptist Mission which I can recommend as being very well run and reasonable.
