7 July - Algeria (Constantine) PDF Print

James Whitmee

I am based in Constantine in the north-east of Algeria. The city is built across a series of hills connected by bridges across ravines. It feels much more provincial then Algiers and has some quirky arrangements, such as that you have to register your passport with the authorities when you arrive.

I have been out looking at the industrial land market which mainly comprises socialist-era estates which have seen little upgrading and where all of the business is local, mainly construction materials but some foodstuffs and pharmaceutical. There is a massive amount of road construction and tunnelling taking place in the vicinity relating to the east-west motorway through Algeria and there is a lot of open-caste mining happening to service this.

I have been driving around up to 150 km of Constantine. Most of the photos below were taken south of Constantine where it starts to get very hot as it is close to the Sahara. There is some very spectacular scenary and archeological sites, and no tourism.
